What Would You Do?

My wife and I met on the Internet. She lived here in the USA, while I lived in the UK.

Now as you can probably imagine, small talk doesn't really last for 5 years (The amount of time before I moved to the USA). We talked either on-line or the phone nearly every day.

So just for something to talk about, we'd do thinks like ask each other the survey questions from magazines, come up with 'What if?" and "What would you do?" questions. You know the type. Like, "You know you're best friend's boyfriend/girlfriend is cheating on them, do you tell your friend?" or "You best friend's partner hits on you, how do you handle it?"

I like these types of questions, so I'm going to ask you all one...inspired by something I read on a Blog today.

Here it is.

Your friend moves into a new house, and recruits you to help with some yard work. You're digging away and find a huge diamond ring. The diamond is so big, it's worth at least $10,000.

What do you do? Do you:

a) Tell your friend about the ring. It's on their property, and therefore their's.

b) Tell your friend, and expect him to sell it and share it with you?

c) Tell your friend, but keep it. You found it, and it's finders keepers?

d) Slip it in your pocket, and 'find' it at your own home a few days later?

One more question:

Your friend buys a new car. One drunken night at their house, you head for home, stumble, and manage to put a nice long deep scratch in the side of it...as well as a nice big dent.

Do you:

a) Keep quiet and act sympathetic when they tell you about it.

b) Come clean and pay for the damage?

Answers on a postcard...or failing that, the comments section.

Before I go, a quick reminder that my story competition has less than a week left to run, so get those stories in!

(Oh, and I know the picture has nothing to do with today's topic, but I just thought it was funny.)

Can I Have a Bucket of Ads, With a Small Side of Entertainment, Please?

Let me ask you a question.

When you sit down to watch a movie, what do you want from it?

Probably entertainment, a little escapism or maybe you want to be given something to make you think, make you laugh or cry.

Chances are, you’re not tuning into a movie to get cooking tips, or makeup hints, or to learn how to play poker.

This is something that I first encountered only after moving to the USA.

You see, some bright spark decided that what people certainly did not want from a movie is to watch it from start to finish, uninterrupted. That’s why they came up with ‘Dinner and a Movie’, ‘Movie and a Makeover” or ‘Casino TV’.

Now for the Brits in the audience, I’ll explain. Let’s start with ‘Dinner and a Movie’.

Well, they show the movie. They also interrupt the movie for the standard ad breaks.

However, and here’s the twist, after every ad break, you get accosted with a ten minute segment where about 3 nobodies show you a little cookery, usually tenuously linked to the movie.

“Well, we’re showing ‘Silence of the Lambs’ on Dinner and a Movie, so today we’re going to be making rack of lamb!”

“Today on Dinner and a Movie, we’re showing the Old Classic ‘Fried Green Tomatoes’, so we’re making, you guessed it, fried green tomatoes!”

Just whose bright idea was this?

It’s not bad enough that we have to spend three and a half hours to watch a two hour movie, we now have to spend four and a half hours, while getting tips on how to cook fried green tomatoes (Basically, you flour them and deep fry them…not rocket science or worth an hour of TV).

The worst thing is the people hosting those segments. They’re you standard complete nobodies, who you can tell, think of themselves as ‘celebrities’. You know, the ‘Hey! Aren’t we really cool and stylin’, we can’t get jobs as real actors or presenters, but we’re gonna rock this 10 minute cookery segment!’

Believe it of not, ‘Dinner and a Movie’, is one of the lowest offenders. Yes, the presenters are ‘punch yourself in balls’ annoying, yes, you don’t want your movie interrupted with their inane and pointless chatter…but at least they actually give you some, albeit unwanted, information. I don’t want to learn to make venison cutlets when I’m watching ‘The Deer Hunter’, but it may come in handy!

No, the worst offender is Spike TV’s ‘Casino TV’ (Or ‘Casino Theatre’, I’m not sure, my brain has blocked the trauma out).

What do they interrupt the movie with?

Gambling.

Whether it’s related to the movie or not.

Now I’m not actually against gambling. I’ve been known to have the occasional flutter myself, but interrupting my movie?

For some reason, ten minutes of watching a fat guy play blackjack, is not what I look forward to. “Damn, I wish this very good classic movie would hurry up, because when it goes off, I get to watch a fat guy and a z-list celebrity playing roulette!”

The presenters on ‘Casino TV’ make the ‘Dinner and a Movie’ presenters look like A-List stars. You have a good-looking blonde, who can do a passable job of reading the auto-cue (usually while the other presenter talks over her trying to be cool and ‘wacky’), another guy who attempts ‘New-York Cool’, and a special guest.

Special Guest, my hairy white British ass!

Yesterday, during an aborted attempt to watch the Bond Classic ‘From Russia With Love’, the special guest was a comedian I’d never heard of.

I knew he was funny, because the two presenters didn’t say one word about him that didn’t include ‘The very funny’, ‘The incredibly funny’ or even ‘Hey, you’re funny.’

He wasn’t funny, he was loud. Apparently if you’re really obnoxious and shout a lot, you’re funny.

He was terrible! Remember the kid at school that no one really liked because he was a bit strange? The kind of kid who would suddenly shout ‘Fruit Loops!” three times in a quiet classroom, then laugh at himself, like his freaky outburst was comic gold? The kind of kid who thought running around the room, making airplane noises while shouting ‘testicle’ was hilarious. The kind of kid who would suddenly start rubbing himself on the swings while shouting “I’m getting my jollies!”

Well imagine that kid on speed.

You get the feeling that all three of them were just pulled in off the street. They didn’t even have the technical skills on how to be on TV. Little things like: don’t talk while another presenter is introducing something, know what camera to look at, keep track of the time so you don’t have to read an entire paragraph of the autocue in a single breath in 15 second.

The ‘comedian’ was the worst, though. He was awful, to the point that he was still shouting inane comments while the real presenters where trying to introduce the next portion of the movie. You know, interrupting the Product placement.

Ahhh, the product placement.

Now in England, product placement in a non-advertisment, is pretty much illegal. The FTC prosecutes if they feel product placement is too prolific in your show.

In other words, the hero can take a Pepsi from the fridge, but he’s not allowed to drink some, go “Ahhhh! Pepsi, my favourite carbonated soft beverage. Pepsi, it’s the choice of a new generation.” Then put the can somewhere where it will remain on screen for 15 minutes.

Remember that sequence in ‘Wayne’s World’, where every time the camera changed from Wayne to Garth and back, they were advertising something? Garth was suddenly dressed entirely in Nike gear, then Wayne would start eating Dorito’s, showing almost orgasmic pleasure, then Garth is drinking a Pepsi, and shows the same pleasure, followed by Pepsi’s tagline. Remember that?

Well these shows make that look like subliminal advertising.

They think they’re being clever about it to, like no one will notice. You get things like the following:

“So, supremely unfunny comedian, I hear you like music.”

“Yes. I love music.”

“Well have you tried the new Ripoffco digital entertainment media center? with 512meg storage, eight hour battery life, crystal clear sound, and compatibility with MP3, WAV, WMV, it’s the best on the market!”

“Yes it is. It’s the only one I’ll own. Available from Best Buy, Comp USA and Circuit City.”

“Yes, for the low, low price of eight thousand dollars.”

“Eight thousand dollars?!? Wow! That’s amazing!”

It’s the same on all of them, 3 minutes of inane chatter, then a 1 minute close up on a particular product, where the presenter nonchalantly talk about how great it is.

Now we reach the crux of the problem.

It’s apparent to everyone that these shows aren’t there for their entertainment value. Also no one wants cookery tips, makeup tips or to watch a fat guy play ‘war’ in the middle of a good movie.

They’re only there to sell us things.

Apparently, someone at the network decided that 8 minutes of ads for every 9 minutes of movies isn’t enough. They also had the unprecedented foresight to realize that if they have 18 minutes of ads for every 9 minutes of movie, no one would watch their network.

So they came up with the glorified, badly disguised infomercials to insert and ruin your favourite movies.

Now advertising should be subtle. Why is it the TV networks treat advertising like a bludgeon? They think if they bash you over the head with ads enough, you’ll eventually crack and buy more stuff.

How about a little honesty and finesse?

Advertising should be like a friend telling you about a product that they like, and recommending it to you. TV is like a mugger who pulls a gun on you and screams “BUY AN IPOD, YOU FUCKER!”

Why have a bunch of retards suddenly interrupt a non-related conversation, to blurt out how fantastic a product is? Why do it in the middle of a movie?

They think More Ads = More Sales = More Cash.

Instead it’s More Ads = More Pissed Off People = Less Viewers.

This has annoyed me so much, that I have honestly started to boycott everything these people advertise. If they want to smack me over the head with ads, I’m not going to pay them for the privilege.

Pretty soon, I’ll be watching only DVD’s. The rental cost is nothing next to an hour of being assaulted by a self-absorbed retard who think he deserves an Oscar for being loud.

I hope that one day, people like you an me get to be in charge. Then we could have ads like:

“This is the new MP3 player from ‘company’, it’s good…not great, but worth the money.”

“Drink Pepsi. It tastes nice.”

“Try Subway, they make good sandwiches.”

Sigh,

At least that way we could get through an ad break in less than an hour.

FISHWARS IV - A NEW HOPE

It’s 7am, and the goldfish are having their morning meeting.

Gil, the scientist of the bunch speaks up:

“Ok, people, here’s what we know so far. 3 days ago, each of us was plucked out of the known universe…”

“HERESY!” Screamed Father Fin. “THAT’S HERESY!”

“What’s heresy, father?” Asked Gil.

“As every young fish should know, the Pondscape makes up the entire universe! It IS the universe! For did not Almighty Charles dig the Pondscape from nothing, using his shovel of truth? And did he not protect the universe with Pond Sheeting from the Heavenly HomeDepot? And did he not fill the universe with the life giving water from his hosepipe of justice? And did he not…”

“THANK YOU, FATHER.” Shouted Gil.

It was going to be one of those days.

“Religion aside, each of us, and no one knows why we were chosen, where scooped from the known universe…thank you Father!…and placed into what appeared to be a mini-universe our researchers have started calling the ‘bucket’. From there...”

“Aliens.” Muttered Jim.

“Excuse me?” Asked Gil.

“Obviously it’s aliens. We’ve been abducted.”

“Don’t be absurd!” retorted Gil.

“Excuse me!” Said Jim, indignantly. “I’m having a nice nap, when suddenly, a great big white thing lifts me out of the known universe…”

“HERESY!”

“…I’m placed in some bright white place, and next thing you know, I’m here…in this freaky place.”

Gil flicked a fin irritably. “There are no such things as aliens.” He said. “It’s statistically impossible.”

“Then how do you explain the crash in Rosewell?” Challenged Jim.

If Gil had a head, or hands…he would have buried the former in the latter.

“Everyone knows about Rosewell!” Continued Jim, “Jack from under the lillypad was there. There was an almighty boom and this great big alien craft that ticked and had these three weird moving parts hit the ground. The next thing he knew it vanished.”

“Yeah!” Said Margaret, who until that point had been only half paying attention. “I heard about that to! The craft vanished, and an almighty sound came from the heavens! It said:

‘DAMN IT! THAT’S THE SECOND BLOODY WATCH I’VE RUINED IN THIS POND!!’”

Gil sighed. “And what does that mean?”

“No… one… knows.” Said Margaret in her best scary voice. “It’s alien language.”

“I heard over 20 fish vanished right then…only the bullfrogs covered it up!” Said Jim.

Gil took a quick lap of the plastic diver to calm down. Obviously, he was dealing with idiots.

“Let’s get back to the point, shall we?” He said. “So we were plucked from the known universe…”

“HERESY! BLASPHEMER!”

“…thank you, father. Put into the mini-universe, then, there was a flash of light, and we found ourselves here. A whole new universe. Lilypad’s greatest scholars thought such places might be possible, but until now…”

“This place gives me the creeps.” Interrupted Jim. “It’s too big. You can see more than 6 inches in front of you and everything. Not to mention the invisible wall!”

The invisible wall was a great mystery. They could see for what looked like tens of yards, a distance unknown to fishkind, all around them, but they could only swim a couple of feet.

“Dat invisble wall is a bidtch.” Said Rodney. “I swab into id as fast as I could. All I god was a brogen dose.”

“Well, we had more luck with the shimmering, Mystical Barrier above us.” Said Jim. “We can breach that, but it’s strange. Once you get part way through, your flippers and gills stop working! I tried it! I just stopped getting any higher, and I couldn’t breathe! Why would that be?”

Gil Braced himself. “I think I know why.”

The others listened intently.

“I think outside the invisible wall, or beyond the mystical barrier, there’s some kind of waterless environment.”

“HERESY!” Screamed Father Fin. “There is no such thing as a waterless environment! For did not Almighty Charles create the water with his Hosepipe of Justice? Did not the Prophet Ken hear Almighty Charles, who told him ‘I’ll be in, in a minute, the bugzapper’s not working!’?”

The rest of the group looked at him quizzically. What the hell is a bugzapper? And what does it have to do with there being no water?

Father Fin had a habit of spouting random scripture when he was confused.

“Listen.” Said Gil. “Things are different here. This is not our universe…Father, if you scream ‘heresy’ at me just once more, I swear I will kick you in the back of the head…What else can explain what happened to poor Gerald?”

“His strength of faith let him leave this place, and right now he is at Almighty Charles side, in the paradise that is ‘HomeDepot’!” Shouted Father Fin. “Homedepot! Where the water is, well, watery, where fish can be free to…erm…swim…and stuff.”

“I don’t think so.” Said Jim, swimming up to the invisible wall. “I can see him, he’s on the floor.”

“Yeah!” Said Margaret. “The poor bastard dropped like a STONE!”

“Exactly!” Said Gil, seizing the moment. “It seems in a waterless environment, there’s a force that pulls you downwards.”

“And his flippers definitely didn’t work!” Said Jim. “he flopped around a bit, after his nosedive, but he just couldn’t gain any altitude.”

“HERESY!” Screamed Father Fin.

Gil tried to find a way to pick up a rock and throw it at him.

“It’s blasphemous and just not possible! For did not Almighty Charles Create the first Fish, John and Barbara, and did he not give unto them…”

“Oh will you just shut up, you insufferable God botherer!” Snapped Gil, all patience having left him. “It’s your fault that poor little Gerald is dead!”

“That is NOT SO!” Screamed Father Fin. “I just…”

“What you ‘just’, is that you ignored my recommendation that scouting missions be put off until we learn a little more about this new universe! You pointed out to Gerald that if he swam, up the Great Bubble Wall as fast as he could, the added current would allow him to pierce the Mystical Barrier! You told him that I was an idiot, and that as Charles Almighty created everything, then the Great Bubble Wall must have been his creation, therefore, it must have a purpose… and that piercing the Mystical Barrier was it!”

“BLASPHEMY! HERESY! BLASPHEMY AGAIN!” Shouted Father Fin.

“You didn’t go yourself, though, did you!” Gil shouted right back. “Better to let poor, simple Gerald try it first!”

“Did not Almighty Charles...”

“Told him he was going to be a hero! A hero? The only thing he’ll be remembered for is the longest jump known to fish kind! The poor bastard shot through the Barrier like a cork, did a double back somersault, a pirouette with a half twist… then he ate the floor! The last thing he heard wasn’t Almighty Charles’ kind voice, it was more of a wet splat!” Gil paused as he caught his breath. “You just look at him, Father Fin, and tell me you’re proud of yourself!”

“You can’t” Said Jim. “That weird thing with the four legs has just eaten him.”

They swam to this invisible wall, just in time to see poor Gerald’s tail vanish between the furry quadruped’s lips

“I hate dat ting.” Said Rodney. “It comes right ub to de invisible wall and just stares. Der first time id did dat, I shid on byself!”

“I know.” Said Jim. “I was right behind you.”

“This fighting isn’t getting us anywhere.” Sighed Margaret. “We need to find a way out of here.”

Gil took a deep breath, and with a dirty look at Father Gil, fell silent. Eventually he said. “You’re right, Let’s get back to business.”

“That’s better.” Said Margaret. “Now we need to find out why the aliens, or possibly the Bullfrogs, did this to us.”

It took three fish to hold Gil back.

Fine minutes later, after much fighting and arguing, the meeting was resumed.

“So, in conclusion.” Said Gil, as he tried to ignore the pain in his dorsal fin. “The general consensus is: We where plucked from the Universe, possibly by aliens, the Bullfrogs… or (sigh) we are all under a spell, made by evil non-believers in the Almighty Charles.

We are currently trapped behind four invisible walls, and a Mystical Barrier above. Outside is an airless environment, although an airless environment cannot possibly exist. If we escape the walls, we have a short trip to the floor, where we suffocate and get eaten by a strange creature with no gills or flippers, but has four legs.”

“Right.” Said everybody.

“I hab a question.” Said Rodney.

Gil braced himself.

“In Bible class, I heard dat Albighty Charles has doo armbs and doo legs.”

“And?” Said Gil.

“Doesn’t he look a bid like dat guy ober dere?”

“HERES…” Began Father Fin, before he withered under Gil’s stare. It would already take weeks for all his scales to grow back.

“Now you come to mention it, he does look a bit like him.” Said Jim. “But Almighty Charles doesn’t have black hair, or fur on face, where no fur should be! Oh, and that guy doesn’t have a Shovel of Truth or a Hosepipe of Justice.”

“He doesn’t look very HomeDepotly either!” Said Jeff, who had overslept and only just arrived.

“Oh!” Said Margaret. “Him! I’ve heard the other one call him Paulius.”

“Other one?” Said Jim.

“Yeah, I think she’s called Sunny. Now she looks a little Homedepotly.”

“Well it’s obvious!” Said Father Fin. “He’s obviously a Demon, who kidnapped Sunny…wait… SUNNY!….SHE’S THE DAUGHTER OF ALMIGHTY CHARLES! Paulius must be the demon, and he’s kidnapped her! He’s a demon…Demon…DEMON!!!”

“Alien or Bullfrog conspiracist.” Said Margaret.

“Responsible for by broken dose.” Said Rodney.

“It’s obvious he’s responsible for bringing us here.” Said Gil. “But why us? Why not some of the others?”

“Who cares!” Said Rodney.

They looked at eachother.

“Let’s try to kill him.”

And there was accord.

Shut Up, Brain, I'm Busy

Education can be a bad thing.

Don’t worry, this isn’t going to be a self-indulgent ‘Oh, it’s so hard to be smart’ thing. Those of you who read this regularly will know that, despite my IQ and qualifications, I am capable of acts of such incredible stupidity the I could fill a whole season of ‘America’s Funniest Home Videos’ if you just videotaped my morning.

I once even told my wife that her dress made her look fat.

In fact, I’m not talking about intelligence here, I’m talking about being well educated.

Yes, there is a major difference between the two.

It is possible to be strikingly intelligent with no education whatsoever, and anyone who’s ever seen a documentary about some private schools will know, it’s possible to be very well educated, while being as thick as a submarine door.

For example, I believe that most student examinations test nothing but memory.

You may have the sharpest, quickest intellect in the world, but if you have no memory, at school, you’re screwed.

For example, at university, I got low marks on lots of essays, because I didn’t include a bibliography. Why no bibliography, you ask? Because I stupidly assumed that my tutors wanted an essay on what I actually knew, not just an introduction, followed by a hundred quotes from textbooks, followed by a conclusion that just said “I agree.”

University became an exercise in learning and understanding things…then spending hours in the library, trying to find the guy who said it first, so I could quote him. If you understand the concept, or know the fact, essay writing becomes an exercise in ‘Hunt the Author’. I know that vampire’s teeth have phallic connotations, but if I can’t find anyone who thought of it, wrote it down and published it, I can’t include it in my essay on “The Mythology and Social Relevance of the Vampire Genre.” Because if I do, my tutor WILL know who said it first, then I get a fail for plagiarism and passing off other’s ideas as my own.

A flash of inspiration is followed by two weeks research, just in case some other bastard had the same flash, wrote it down, and published it.

I said that exams only test memory. Just because you know the answer to a question (thereby passing the education system’s requirements), doesn’t mean you actually understand it.

For example, I know that ‘When a magnetic field passes through a strip of conductive material, a potential difference is set up across its ends.”

Great, concise and to the point, and explains the theory exactly. I put this in a final physics exam, passed and got an ‘A’.

Unfortunately, I have no clue what the hell that means. I think it has something to do with electricity, or maybe magnetism...maybe both!

However, I didn’t understand a word of it, but memorizing the textbooks got me an ‘A’ in science.

Now that I’ve pissed all over the education system, I’ll return to my point. Why can being educated be a bad thing?

Well, my biggest problem was that I foolishly chose to study things I actually enjoy. Books, movies and any kind of story telling.

Let’s take a flashback to a late-teens Paulius, sitting in an English class. This semester it was Film Studies.

“You know, I hate this class.” Paulius said to his tutor.

“Why?” Replied the Tutor.

“I used to be able to sit back and just watch a movie and enjoy it. Now I’ve had three years spent studying them, I have to actually think about them. I automatically start critiquing, looking for relevance and metaphor. It’s become a habit that I can’t break. I can’t just sit back, munch my popcorn, suspend disbelief and enjoy it. I can’t watch a movie know without actively thinking and analyzing it!”

“Good.” Replied the tutor.

This is why I now tend to enjoy the ‘Special Features’ on the DVD more than the actual movie.

There are two main problems with this. The first, and most acute, is that it drives the wife absolutely nuts. I mean, it drives her mental. She sees a good movie. I ruin it by tearing it to shreds.

Again, picture the scene. Paulius and Sunny are driving home from seeing Star Wars: Episode III.

Sunny makes the fatal mistake of asking me what I think.

“It was good.” Said Paulius, who should have stopped there. “…considering Lucas had to shoehorn 3 movies worth of narrative into a single episode. Did you not think that the way the Emperor destroyed a young family showed his evilness a lot more effectively than him destroying a planet? You could relate to it more. Like how focusing on one small group of people, rather than the whole army, gave you a better sense of the sacrifices of war in “Saving Private Ryan”

“Uh.” Said Sunny.

“Did you know that George Lucas uses a lot of mythical archetypes in his movies? You have the classical characters, the young, simple hero, the experienced warrior, the mysterious wizard, the princess. He follows Strauss’ model of narrative theory.”

“Er.” Said Sunny.

“He also uses a lot of contextual and deeply symbolic cues, to subconsciously give the viewer more insight into the narrative and characters, done in such a way that you don’t actually realize it, but it speaks directly to your psyche. For example, the juxtaposition of Anakin’s Bright blue lightsaber, indicating goodness and purity, against his dark clothes and looks. Did you notice he was the only Jedi to wear a lot of black? Showing that he has a hidden evil within him?”

“Umm.” Said Sunny.

“Following that line of thought, did you notice the Jedi always wear their hoods down (apart from the bit in Episode II on Kamino, when it was raining), which indicates openness and honesty, whereas the Sith always have their hoods up or faces partially hidden, signifying dishonesty, shadow and being hidden?”

“Shut the f**k up.” Said Sunny.

“Not to mention the lightsaber itself is very visible, non-concealable weapon signifying…” THUNK.

“I said shut it.” Said Sunny.

“Ouch.” Said Paulius.

You see, what I should have said was: “It was good! Did you see all those Wookies? ‘ROOOAAAAAARRRORRR!! And that fight scene! Wow. I like the bit where that guy fought that other guy and got his legs chopped off!”

Education causes bodily injury.

If you follow this logically, my reasoning is simple. Put in its simplest form, your significant other will beat you about the head with a two by four, just to shut you up.

I said there were two main problems with education. The second is this:

I no longer have any tolerance for anything but excellent writing when it comes to books..

In fact, that’s a little too lenient. I have no tolerance for anything less than almost genius level work.

I don’t mean that a book has to be as intellectually high-brow as Stephen Hawking’s ‘A Brief History of Time’ for me to read it. (I have actually read ‘A Brief History of Time. The 8% of the book I actually understood was very interesting) I just mean that for me to read a book, it has to have been written spectacularly well.

In my pre-Uni days, I had billions of books. If it was printed on a page, I would read it, and probably enjoy it. Who cared if it was just a cheap rip-off of another book? Who cared if it was as formulaic as a recipe? Who cared if the characters were one dimensional stereotypes?

I didn’t.

But I do now.

In fact, there’s only a handful of authors I will actually read. In fact, scratch that, there are only a few authors I actually CAN read.

Terry Pratchett is my current favourite. To reiterate my point, his books aren’t high-brow at all, they’re pure entertainment. It’s just he manages to say in a single sentence what other authors take 10 pages to put across. I mean, his work is so excellent, you get that magic experience where the book, words and pages melt away, and you actually ‘see’ the story. You get totally swept away. He’ll describe a scene, and you can actually see it. Even the characters, which include werewolves, wizards and a beggar with a smell so foul it has its own form and personality, are so real, you hardly believe that they’re fiction.

I have an acid test for books. I simply turn to a page somewhere in the middle, and read the first paragraph I see. The book has exactly that amount of text to hook me. If it doesn’t, it goes back on the shelf.

This may sound stupid, but a book has never passed that test that I didn’t like. Every book that has failed that test, that I read anyway, normally makes it to about half way in, before I just can’t force myself to read any more of it.

It makes me feel like I’m missing out. It’s the same experience as watching a cartoon you loved as a kid, or playing a computer game that you used to play on your original Nintendo…and you’re horrified to discover that it isn’t half as much fun, or nearly as good as you remember it being. You’ve replaced a cherished childhood memory with “I can’t believe I used to love this crap.”

(The Magic Faraway Tree, however, is great childhood book no matter how many times you read it, or what age you are).

That’s what a lot of books are like for me. Even ones I haven’t read. I know that 10 years ago I would have loved it, but now?

My wife is currently reading a book titled ‘Eragon’, exactly the type of book I used to read in a single sitting, and read over and over again until it was so worn out it fell to pieces.

I tried to read ‘Eragon’, and despite the fact that story seemed good, I couldn’t continue.

The reason? It was too derivative of every other Fantasy book out there, and all the characters seemed to be carbon copies of every other fantasy character ever created. It seemed good, but there was nothing new.

A good book lets you see past the words, directly into the heart of the story.

An education MAKES you look past the story, and into the mechanics of the tale. The most magical thing seems mundane when you know exactly how it works. You don’t see people, you see constructed characters, you see the plot points, you see where the author struggled, you see where he got lazy and carbon copied an existing character.

You feel like “This is a good story, I know it’s a good story…but in the end, it’s just a slightly poorer copy of another book.” Or. “Sigh, let me guess, his friend is going to be working for the bad guy, this bad guy will have a change of heart and this chick is definitely going to get kidnapped. Yawn.”

It’s like me creating a TV show called “Doin’ it in the Metropolis” Featuring 4 world weary women, looking for men, featuring a slutty character, an over-thinker, a naïve, doe eyed optimist and a woman who writes about ‘Doin’ it in the Metropolis’ for a popular magazine.

It could be an excellent show in its own right, but you already know the characters, the setting and what’s going to happen. If you ever watched the ‘other’ show, you’re not going to like it.

In other words. It sucks.

The best way I can express this is that it’s like watching the world’s best magic show, but you know exactly how all the tricks are done. You know what you’re seeing is good, but the actual wonder and entertainment has been sucked out. Where everyone else in the audience is seeing a man fly…all you see is a man being hoisted around the stage on a Kevlar thread by three guys behind the scenery.
